Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: In a spectacular display of international fashion and cultural diversity, the world’s highest motorable road, Umling-la, situated at a breathtaking altitude of 19024 ft, became the stage for a historic World Record-breaking international fashion runway on September 28. This remarkable event, part of the Vibrant Ladakh Festival, witnessed the participation of delegates from 14 G-20 nations and guest nations from across the globe.
Organized by the UT Ladakh Administration and LAHDC Leh, in collaboration with the Ladakh Art and Entertainment Alliance, and with valuable support from the Indian Army and Border Roads Organization, this high-altitude extravaganza captured the essence of India’s vibrant culture, encapsulated in the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.’
International models, including the stunning Himachal’s daughter, Miss Earth India 2022 Vanshika Parmar, alongside two Ladakhi delegates, graced the runway. They showcased not only the Spring/Summer 2024 color palette but also the exquisite products made from the highly valued GI-tagged Pashmina of Ladakh, originating from the Changthang region.
In line with the ‘One Earth, One Family’ theme of G20 India, a foundation stone was laid for the construction of Lord Buddha’s statue at Umling-la for World Peace, with sands brought by the models from their respective countries. The models, being the first international tourists allowed for a night stay in Hanle, were warmly welcomed by the villagers who expressed their elation through exclusive cultural performances. This event not only broke records but also forged bonds and celebrated the rich cultural tapestry of India, making it a truly glamorous and unforgettable spectacle.
Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, applauded this remarkable achievement and expressed gratitude to Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah for facilitating the stay of foreign tourists in Hanle. He emphasized the significance of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, symbolized by the participation of international models and the integration of sands brought by them during the Buddhe Statue’s foundation stone laying ceremony at Umling-la.
CEC Gyalson also commended the unwavering support of the Indian Army and BRO, led by Brigadier Gaurav Karki and Colonel Ponung Doming.
Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee praised the organizers and empowered women/models for their dedicated efforts in making the World’s Highest International Fashion Runway a success. He highlighted the role of such unique initiatives in promoting ‘Border Tourism’ under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
