Kangra, Himachal: RPGMC Tanda has achieved a breakthrough in the “Spectrum of Open Heart Surgery,” expanding its range of super-specialty services. This achievement underscores the institution’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to the local population and reducing the burden on those seeking medical assistance outside the state.

Dr. Bhanu Awasthi, Principal of DR RPGMC Tanda, commended the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) and Anaesthesia for their dedication to increasing the spectrum of open heart surgery procedures. The support from Honourable Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, guidance from Honorable Minister for Health and Family Welfare Col(Dr) Dhaniram Shandil, and the efforts of Honourable Cabinet Rank Tourism department Shri R.S Bali have been instrumental in this medical advancement.

Open heart surgery procedures commenced on September 25, 2023, under the supervision of the CTVS department. The initial phase, conducted by the cardiac surgery team of DR. RPGMC-Tanda, in collaboration with AIMSS Chamiana, included heart valve replacement and repair (Aortic, Mitral), as well as the repair of heart defects. A total of seven cases were successfully completed in the first phase, with all patients recovering well….

• In subsequent months, the surgical team exclusively handled four cases in November, addressing three heart valve issues and one congenital defect. December witnessed four additional successful cases, encompassing valve replacement, repair, and the excision of a cardiac tumor (LA Myxoma) under the supervision of CTVS Tanda.

• All previously operated patients have experienced smooth recoveries, being discharged in stable conditions. The ongoing success of these open heart surgeries highlights the dedication and proficiency of the medical teams at DR RPGMC Tanda. Crucially, these complex and expensive surgeries were made accessible to economically disadvantaged patients under the PMJAY/Himcare scheme, providing invaluable financial assistance to those in need.

• Patients operated on in December are currently faring well in the postoperative period in the ICU and are expected to be discharged soon in stable conditions. The strides made by DR RPGMC Tanda in the field of open heart surgery signify a pivotal step towards achieving inclusive and high-quality healthcare for the community.
