Kihar/Chamba: The police have significantly increased security measures in Kihar to restore and maintain law and order after violence broke out in the area. The tension arose following the brutal murder of Hindu Dalit Manohar, which has sparked political and communal controversies. To address the situation, strictness is being imposed under Section 144, effective from Thursday. Police and additional security forces have been deployed throughout the region, while the public is being urged to maintain peace through loudspeakers. Furthermore, instructions have been given to avoid gatherings of more than four people in one place.
- The murder of Manohar has garnered nationwide attention and raised concerns over its political and communal implications. Reports suggest that Manohar was involved in a relationship with a Muslim girl, which allegedly led to his tragic demise. The girl’s relatives are believed to have killed Manohar, dismembered his body into eight pieces, and disposed of them in a drain after placing them in a sack. Manohar had been missing for several days, and when his body was discovered on June 9, the police initially closed the case. However, the situation escalated rapidly thereafter.
- The incident incited outrage among Hindu organizations, prompting the opposition to demand an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). In response to mounting tensions, an angry mob first surrounded the Kihar police station, and later set fire to the houses of the accused individuals. In light of the volatile situation, the administration was compelled to impose Section 144 as a precautionary measure. It should be noted that five individuals, including the main accused, have already been arrested in connection with the case.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Sukhu, in an effort to maintain law and order, conducted a video conference with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all districts late in the last evening. He appealed to the opposition not to communalize the incident and assured that strict punishment would be pursued for those responsible for the heart-wrenching murder.
ADG (Additional Director General of Police) Abhishek Trivedi commented on the matter, stating that the motive behind the murder appears to be a love affair. He further mentioned that the incident was exploited by an angry mob and certain political figures, who amplified the situation and incited the public. As of now, five individuals have been arrested, including the girl, her uncle and aunt, as well as her brother and sister-in-law.
The security reinforcement and imposition of Section 144 in Kihar signify the government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of the residents. It is imperative that all parties involved act responsibly and refrain from inflaming communal tensions further. The ongoing investigations will hopefully bring justice to Manohar and his grieving family, as the state authorities work diligently to prosecute those responsible for this heinous crime.
